As we continue to strive towards our Environmental goals, we are introducing our latest development towards an eco-friendly product range. We are now producing fully biodegradable plastic syringes as an optional extra for all of our 3ml gels.
This optional extra is a great addition to your brand’s 3ml syringes, reducing environmental pollution and appealing to the ever-growing demographic of ethical consumers in society today.
What is the current problem with plastics?
A common misconception about plastic is that plastics are not biodegradable. All plastics that are produced are actually fully biodegradable. However, the current problem with the plastics commonly used in syringes is that it does not break down easily. For a normal plastic syringe to fully break down and biodegrade, it can actually take upwards of 450 years!
So how does this work? During the degrading process, plastic will gradually break down into smaller pieces until they have fully disintegrated. The biggest challenge with this is because of the huge amount of time it takes to break down, the broken down plastic content can often get swept into our oceans and cause a major environmental issue. It is currently unknown just how much plastic is swept into the ocean each year, although it is thought to be vast.
However, many countries across the world are recognising and actively combatting this issue. Recycling and introducing eco-friendly alternatives such as compostable and biodegradable products are becoming popular in many countries, but stil not to an acceptable level among many companies.
For us, it is simply not acceptable to use products that have the potential to cause this much damage to our environment. For this reason, our biodegradable syringes are specially engineered to fully break down in as little as 400 days.
How does it work?
Biodegradable plastics are created using plant-based substances. Due to the biological makeup of the plastics, they are fully susceptible to being broken down by bacteria, as opposed to normal plastics that will only partly decompose over time.
Our biodegradable syringes will break down into Carbon Dioxide, Water & Biomass, creating an environmentally-friendly and mineral-rich substance that will help to nourish the ground around it.
Because our syringes are biodegradable, this reduces the time it takes for these syringes to degrade down to around 18 months, leaving nothing but biomass in its place.
Will this impact the product quality?
In short, no. Even though the plastic that we use in our syringes is biodegradable, the biodegrading process will actually only begin when the syringes are in a landfill, compost, or marine environment. Only specific microbes and bacteria will break down our plastic syringes, so you can be assured that your syringes will remain in pristine condition until they are properly disposed of.
Will this impact how recyclable the syringes are?
No, our biodegradable syringes can still be recycled. The additive does not impact the recyclability of the polymers unless it comes into long-term contact with soil, marine or landfill environments.
